There is nothing unusual about a summer music festival highlighting its students. But there is something unusual about one of the students who will be on stage at Walter Hall this afternoon. The tall, thin 33-year-old, who is about to play Franz Liszt’s daunting Mephisto Waltz on the concert Steinway at the Toronto Summer Music festival is not a full-time student or a full-time musician. Ricker: “So what should I wear?”
Andrew: “You look just fine.”
Ricker: “Really? The green looks ok?”
Andrew: “Yea, just wear whatever you normally do when you practise.”

…… Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a piano master class at the home and studio of Boris Zarankin and Inna Perkis-Zarankin. Located on a beautiful tree-lined street, just steps from Danforth Avenue, their home is nothing less than a sanctuary for Music and Art…… The quality of playing ranged from “good” to “utterly professional” - the latter used to describe a sublime rendering of the rarely played Liszt transcription of the Liebestod aria from Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde, performed by their own student, Ricker Choi…… (read on……)

Musician Ricker Choi became involved with Oxfam after hearing about the organization through Canadian pianist Anton Kuerti. Having always loved music, Ricker found that he was able to connect to people and make great friends through his music, hence his idea of using music to inspire people to contribute to those in need.  (read on……)

Meanwhile, Rebecca Davis, a homemaker from Minnesota, won the most awards including the Audience Award and Honorable Mention from the press jurors for “her great sense of performance and her ability to build a program.” (read on……)
